Переплет в удовлетворительном состоянии: значительная потертость и загрязнения по краям и уголкам, небольшие утраты покровного материала у корешка, поверхностные трещины красочного слоя иллюстрации. Блок в хорошем состоянии: хромолитографированные иллюстрации яркие и полностью сохранены; отдельные страницы с загрязнениями и надрывами по краям, задняя рекламная страница (список изданий Сытина) с потертостями и утратой фрагмента текста; текст полностью читается, комплектно.

Two unattributed ownership inscriptions in ink, in different hands, on the title page. 
Binding fair: substantial wear and soiling at edges and corners, small losses to the covering material at the spine, surface cracking to the paint layer of the pictorial panel. Text block good: chromolithographed illustrations bright and complete; scattered leaves with soiling and edge tears, the rear advertisement leaf (listing Sytin's other publications) worn with a small loss of text; text fully legible and complete.

A lavishly produced late-Imperial edition of Ivan Krylov's fables, issued by the celebrated Moscow publisher Ivan Sytin, whose firm dominated affordable illustrated publishing for the Russian mass reading public at the turn of the twentieth century. Krylov (1769-1844), Russia's most beloved fabulist, is represented here by more than sixty fables, opening with a substantial biographical sketch illustrated with an engraving of his monument in the Summer Garden in St. Petersburg. Each fable is paired with a full-page chromolithographed illustration in a naturalistic academic style, depicting the fables' animal casts (the crow and the fox, the wolf and the lamb, the lion and the mouse, the frogs demanding a tsar, among many others) in detailed landscape settings, a hallmark of Sytin's high-end children's and family gift-book production of the 1890s. The volume concludes with a page of reduced reproductions advertising other Sytin juvenile titles, offering a window onto the wider ecosystem of popular illustrated publishing in late Imperial Russia. It will appeal to collectors of Russian illustrated books, Sytin imprints, and the publishing history of Krylov's fables.
