A landmark monograph in nonlinear functional analysis, by Mark Alexandrovich Krasnoselsky (1920-1997), one of the foremost Soviet specialists in the theory of nonlinear operators and a member of the Voronezh school of functional analysis founded by his teacher Selim Krein. First published in this 1956 Russian edition of only 6,000 copies, the book systematically develops the topological degree theory of vector fields, fixed-point theorems (Schauder, Leray-Schauder), the theory of positive operators, and their applications to the existence and multiplicity of solutions of nonlinear integral equations, including the Urysohn and Hammerstein operators central to nonlinear analysis. The monograph's influence was such that it was translated into English by Pergamon Press in 1964 as "Topological Methods in the Theory of Nonlinear Integral Equations," becoming a standard international reference in nonlinear functional analysis, bifurcation theory, and the qualitative theory of differential and integral equations. Issued in the prestigious "Contemporary Problems of Mathematics" series under the aegis of the editorial board of Uspekhi Matematicheskikh Nauk, the leading Soviet mathematical survey journal, the book remains a foundational text cited continuously in the literature on nonlinear operator theory over six decades after publication.
