This booklet is number 11 in the series Tradition and Modernity, issued by the Scientific Coordination Center for Problems of Social and Cultural Traditions of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR. According to the publisher's abstract, it deals with ethnic and, in particular, national self-awareness: the factors that produce it, its importance in the life of an ethnos or a nation, and the state of the question in Soviet scholarship. It also discusses how ethnic and national self-awareness relate to ideology and to traditions, and shows the long history of this connection on Georgian material, taking the history of Georgian social thought as its example. The text is introduced by an epigraph from Konstantine Gamsakhurdia on Socratic self-knowledge applied to a whole people (Works, vol. VIII, Tbilisi, 1967). The opening pages follow the manner of the period and begin with contacts between peoples in the pre-capitalist age and the internationalization of social life, citing Marx. The editor was the philologist Nodar Natadze, and two historians acted as reviewers.
