A dissertation abstract documenting Komarnitsky's contribution to the Soviet school of model-theoretic algebra, defended at the Institute of Mathematics of the Moldavian Academy of Sciences in Kishinev under the supervision of Ye. L. Gorbachuk and opposed by Lev Anatolyevich Skornyakov, the Moscow State University ring theorist whose textbooks on rings and modules were standard references throughout the Soviet Union. The dissertation extends into radical theory the line of research on the model-theoretic axiomatizability of classes of modules inaugurated by Eklof and Sabbagh's work on injective, projective, and flat modules, itself building on Anatoly Malcev's foundational 1939 application of logical methods to embeddability problems in semigroup and group theory. Komarnitsky establishes criteria for the axiomatizability of the semisimple and radical classes attached to an arbitrary radical in the category of modules over a ring, obtaining, among other results, a complete characterisation of rings over which the semisimple class of every radical is axiomatizable: precisely the finite direct sums of local perfect rings. The results, obtained largely through ultraproduct techniques, were reported at the Third All-Union Symposium on the Theory of Rings, Algebras, and Modules in Tartu and the Fourteenth All-Union Algebraic Conference in Novosibirsk. Issued in a working print run of 110 free copies for distribution to Soviet mathematical institutes ahead of the September 1979 defence, the pamphlet is characteristic ephemera of the Kishinev-Lviv algebraic school and of interest to historians of Soviet model theory and specialist collectors of dissertation literature in ring and module theory.
