A charming piece of Soviet Georgian children's musical ephemera by Grigory (Grigol) Kokeladze, a Tbilisi-trained conductor and composer later honoured as a People's Artist of the Georgian SSR, remembered among the founders of Georgian children's song alongside Maro Davitashvili and other composers of the republic's mid-century musical-education movement. Set to verses by L. Zhvania in a Russian translation by M. Kvaliashvili, the song addresses the ideological figure of the young "octobrenok" (Octobrist, the youngest tier of the Soviet children's political organisation preceding the Young Pioneers), who greets the sunrise with joy at the prospect of growing into a builder of the Soviet future - "as necessary on the construction site as steel, iron, and concrete." The bilingual Georgian-Russian format, typical of Musfond Georgian Branch publications of the period, allowed the piece to circulate both within the republic and across the wider Union school-choir repertoire. The cover bears a pen-and-ink illustration, partly hand-tinted in yellow to render the rising sun, of two schoolchildren on their way to school - a stock image of Soviet primary education iconography of the 1950s. As with much sheet music intended for classroom consumption and repeated use, surviving copies are scarce; the piece is of interest to collectors of Soviet Georgian musical publishing and of children's propaganda song literature.
