Igor Sergeevich Klochkov (1944-2014) was one of the leading Russian Assyriologists of his generation, a scholar of Sumero-Akkadian literature at the Oriental Faculty of Leningrad/St. Petersburg State University, a participant in Soviet archaeological expeditions in northern Mesopotamia and Syria, and the translator into Russian of major Akkadian literary-religious texts including the "Babylonian Theodicy." "Spiritual Culture of Babylonia: Man, Fate, Time," published here under the general editorship of the eminent Assyriologist and historian I.M. Diakonov, is regarded as one of the most significant achievements of Soviet-era Assyriology: it was among the first attempts to bring the mentalité-historical approach pioneered for medieval European studies by A. Ya. Gurevich ("Categories of Medieval Culture") and M.I. Steblin-Kamensky ("Myth") to bear on the cuneiform record, reconstructing how the inhabitants of Babylonia in the second and first millennia BCE actually experienced and conceptualized time, fate, property, and ethical obligation, rather than simply cataloguing formal religious doctrine.
