A specialist archaeological monograph on one of the lesser-studied aspects of ancient Colchian civilization: the rural settlement and associated pithos-burial necropolis at Dapnari (Samtredia district, western Georgia), part of the agricultural hinterland of the great Colchian center of Vani. Drawing on newly excavated material, the author, Nina Kiguradze, presents in detail the funerary complexes of the 4th-2nd centuries BCE, their burial rites, grave goods, and associated dwelling remains, situating them within the broader network of Classical-period antiquities of western Georgia. The uniformity of burial type, housing, and material culture documented at Dapnari is presented as evidence of a coherent ethnic community inhabiting central Colchis in this period, with the excavated graves interpreted as belonging to ordinary rural producers, members of the peasant-farmer strata of Colchian society rather than to an elite. The volume, edited by the prominent Georgian archaeologist O. D. Lordkipanidze, situates the Dapnari material within the historiography of Colchian studies stretching back to the mid-nineteenth century, and is illustrated throughout with forty-eight plates of photographs and measured drawings of ceramic vessels, jewelry, skeletal remains, and burial contexts. As a focused site publication from the Vani archaeological program, issued in a modest print run, the book is of interest to specialists in Colchian and South Caucasian antiquity, Classical-period Black Sea archaeology, and the material culture of ancient Georgia.
