The standard biographical monograph on Mikheil Tumanishvili (1818-1875), a founding figure of nineteenth-century Georgian literary romanticism who later became one of the first champions of literary realism in Georgian criticism. Born in the village of Kheltubani (from which the present biographer, writing under the surname Kheltubneli, appears to take his own name), Tumanishvili studied at the Tbilisi gymnasium alongside Nikoloz Baratashvili, became one of the earliest translators of Pushkin into Georgian (rendering, among other works, "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai" and passages of "The Prisoner of the Caucasus"), and contributed extensively to the periodicals "Tsiskari," "Droeba," and "Kavkaz" as a critic, publicist, and early historian of the Georgian theatre; he prompted and prompted for the 1850 production of Giorgi Eristavi's play that is traditionally credited with founding professional Georgian theatre. Compiled from archival and periodical sources, Kheltubneli's 1938 study remains, as later Georgian literary scholarship confirms through repeated citation, the principal biographical account of Tumanishvili's life, gathering his correspondence, contemporaries' recollections, and facsimile reproductions of period documents, including the manuscript cover of a Tiflis gymnasium student literary journal from 1835 in which the young Tumanishvili and his classmates, including Baratashvili's circle, were involved. As a well-preserved, cleanly printed first edition of a still-cited scholarly biography of a foundational figure in Georgian romantic literature and theatre criticism, the volume holds lasting reference value for specialists in nineteenth-century Georgian literary history.
