A rare group of three early issues of the most celebrated and longest-running problem collection in group theory, a title known to essentially every working group theorist worldwide. The idea of a standing "Problems Day" and a resulting notebook of open questions was proposed by Mikhail Ivanovich Kargapolov during the First All-Union Symposium on Group Theory, held at the Kourovka tourist base near Sverdlovsk; the Problems Day itself, 16 February 1965, is reckoned the notebook's official birth date, and this first issue, edited by Kargapolov and Yuri Merzlyakov alone, is the founding document of the entire series. Now in its 21st-plus edition and continuously updated every two to four years since, the Kourovka Notebook has been translated and published internationally, including by the American Mathematical Society, and occupies a place in group theory comparable to the Scottish Book in functional analysis. The fourth issue (1973) and fifth issue (1976) trace the collection's rapid growth from a slim 18-page pamphlet of 90 problems to an 83-page volume, the latter carrying an explicit English-language notice to foreign readers confirming its correct international title, evidence that the notebook was already circulating and being cited abroad within a decade of its founding. All three issues were produced as internal rotaprint publications of the Siberian Branch's Institute of Mathematics in tiny runs of 1,000-1,500 copies, intended for distribution among specialists rather than public sale, making original printings of any issue scarce, and the founding 1965 issue in particular a landmark rarity of twentieth-century mathematical literature.
