Grigor Kapantsyan (1887-1957) was born in Ashtarak, studied in the Oriental faculty at St Petersburg under Nikolai Marr, and from 1921 taught at Yerevan State University, where he long chaired the department of general linguistics. A founding member of the Armenian Academy of Sciences and later director of its Institute of Language, he was the leading Armenian specialist of his generation on Urartian and Hittite. In this short monograph he compares Urartian, the language of the Van inscriptions, with Hittite, Hurrian and Armenian material, and argues that Urartian was the last crystallization of the languages of Biaina, in strong ethno-cultural contact with Hittite and Hurrian tribes and later a source for the languages of historical Armenia. The author's preface, dated Yerevan, 20 April 1934, states that the work was written as early as 1929 and read at the Armenian Institute of Sciences, with later additions placed in square brackets; its Marxist vocabulary is characteristic of Soviet linguistics of the 1930s. The text is followed by an index of Urartian, Armenian and Slavic words with page references. Printed in only 1,000 copies by the state publishing house of the Armenian SSR, it is an early Soviet study of Urartian and is still cited in modern literature on the Hurro-Urartian languages. It will interest collectors of Armenian and Near Eastern scholarship, Urartologists and Hittitologists, and historians of Soviet linguistics.
