A Soviet Georgian scholarly edition, prepared under the auspices of the G. Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, of the Qabus-nameh (Qabus-nama), the celebrated eleventh-century Persian mirror-for-princes composed around 1082 by the Ziyarid prince Kai Kaus ibn Iskandar ibn Qabus for the instruction of his son Gilanshah. Written in an accessible, anecdotal Persian prose that became a model of classical Persian literary style, the work comprises forty-four chapters of practical and moral counsel touching on statecraft, warfare, commerce, astrology, love, old age, and the conduct proper to every station of court and household life, and stands among the foundational texts of the medieval Persian didactic-literature tradition alongside works such as the Siyasatnama and the Chahar Maqala. This Georgian edition, translated directly from the Persian with a scholarly introduction and annotations by the Georgian orientalist Amiran Lomtadze, situates the text within the wider Soviet Georgian program of critical editions of classical Near Eastern literature undertaken by the Tsereteli Institute, one of the principal centers of Iranian and Arabic studies in the Soviet Caucasus.
