The second title in "Literaturnye Pamyatniki" ("Monuments of World Literature"), the celebrated Soviet and later Russian academic series of scholarly editions of world classics founded in 1948 under the patronage of Academy of Sciences president Sergei Vavilov. This volume gathers, in one authoritative Russian translation, the complete corpus of Caesarian military commentaries: the seven books on the Gallic War and three on the Civil War composed by Caesar himself, together with the continuation on the Gallic War and the accounts of the Alexandrian and African Wars written by officers of his staff. The translation and extensive commentary were the last major work of the classical philologist Academician Mikhail M. Pokrovsky (1869-1942), prepared for publication posthumously by F. A. Petrovsky, who took particular care to preserve the text as Pokrovsky himself had intended it. Illustrated with plates, campaign maps, and a chronological table converting the Roman calendar, and bound in a striking cloth binding designed by the artist I. F. Rerberg, the volume is both an important document in the history of Soviet classical scholarship and a handsome collector's edition of one of the foundational texts of Roman historiography and Latin prose.
