Besarion Jorbenadze was a leading Georgian linguist of the second half of the twentieth century, Professor at the Department of Modern Georgian Language of Tbilisi State University, and one of the principal authorities on Georgian verbal morphology and functional syntax. The present monograph, issued in 1980 by Tbilisi University Press, represents the fullest systematic treatment of the Georgian verb from the dual perspective of formal morphology and functional analysis. The eight chapters of the work move from the foundational ontological and methodological questions of linguistic science through a treatment of old and modern Georgian, the methodology of functional class analysis, the dynamics of verb formation in Georgian, the principles governing the combination and orthographic representation of verb forms, the problematic of verb form compatibility, principles of functional verb analysis, and the semantic-structural guidelines for the classification of verb forms. The editors were Sh. Dzidziguri, a major figure in Georgian linguistics, and D. Getsdze. With a print run of only 2,000 copies, the book belongs to the genuinely rare category of Soviet Georgian university press monographs intended primarily for internal academic distribution and rarely reaching the book trade. Collectors and scholars working in Kartvelian linguistics, Georgian verbal typology, and the comparative study of Caucasian verb systems will find this a substantive and scarce reference.
