A foundational monograph in general topology and dimension theory by Pavel Sergeevich Aleksandrov (1896-1982), the principal founder of the Moscow school of topology and one of the most influential Soviet mathematicians of the twentieth century. A student of Nikolai Luzin and close collaborator of Pavel Urysohn, with whom he laid much of the groundwork for modern dimension theory in the 1920s, Aleksandrov went on to supervise a remarkable line of doctoral students including Lev Pontryagin and Andrey Tikhonov, and to give his name to standard constructions still taught today, including the Aleksandrov (one-point) compactification and the Aleksandrov topology. His co-author, Boris Alekseevich Pasynkov (1937-2020), a professor at Moscow State University, was himself a leading specialist in dimension theory and paracompactness. Issued by Nauka's physics and mathematics division in 1973 as a systematic textbook-monograph, the work carries the reader from the elementary properties of topological spaces through the classical theorems of dimension theory, deliberately favoring results provable by broadly applicable set-theoretic methods over an exhaustive survey of recent specialized theorems, and remains usable as a graduate-level introduction from the second university year onward. As the first book publication to bring Aleksandrov's mature treatment of dimension theory together in a single systematic volume, printed in a modest run of 7,700 copies and never reprinted in this hardcover first edition (a later stereotype paperback reprint was issued decades afterward), the book is of interest to research mathematicians working in topology, university and institutional libraries building collections in the history of Soviet mathematics, and specialist collectors of Aleksandrov's work.
