A complete four-volume set of abstracts from the International Conference on Algebra held in Novosibirsk's Akademgorodok in August 1989 to mark the eightieth anniversary of the birth of Anatoly Maltsev, the founder of the Siberian school of algebra and mathematical logic whose students and successors organized and edited this event. The conference brought together specialists from across the Soviet Union and abroad, with contributions from Moscow, Alma-Ata, Tomsk, and other centers spanning ring and module theory, model theory, group theory, algebraic geometry, and applied and computer algebra. The editorial boards of the four volumes read as a roster of the leading Soviet algebraists of the period: the rings and algebras volume was edited by Efim Zelmanov, who five years later, in 1994, received the Fields Medal for his solution of the restricted Burnside problem; the group theory volume was issued under Evgeny Khukhro, a long-serving co-editor of the celebrated "Kourovka Notebook" of unsolved problems in group theory, alongside fellow editor Viktor Mazurov, likewise a long-time Kourovka Notebook editor; and the model theory volume was edited by Evgeny Palyutin, co-author with Yuri Ershov of the standard Soviet textbook "Mathematical Logic." Together the four volumes document, at a single moment just before the end of the Soviet Union, the full breadth of research activity of the Novosibirsk algebraic school descended from Maltsev.
