This pocket manual was issued by the Soviet Ministry of Defence to rank-and-file soldiers and sailors in 1962, at the height of the Cold War, and was marked "not for sale" because it was distributed through military units. Its premise is that a ground or naval force might have to fight on a battlefield where nuclear, chemical and biological weapons were in use. It is organised in three parts, with twelve chapters and thirty-six numbered sections. The first part explains the nature and effects of each weapon, including the shock wave, light radiation, penetrating radiation and radioactive contamination. The second part tells the soldier how to behave in attack, in defence and on the march, and the sailor how to act aboard ship. The third part covers protection: trenches, slit trenches and shelters, detection of radioactive, toxic and bacterial agents, the gas mask and skin protection, hygiene, and decontamination, degassing and disinfection. The text is addressed to the reader in the second person and is illustrated with line drawings and diagrams, a frontispiece of a soldier with an automatic rifle urging the reader to study the manual, and a striking colour cover showing a mushroom cloud, tanks and advancing infantry. As a service manual, it has a limited conventional collecting value. Its appeal lies in its historical context: it is a primary document of Soviet military doctrine and of the nuclear anxieties of the early 1960s, of interest to collectors of Cold War, civil defence and Soviet military ephemera.
