The first Russian translation of David Hilbert's landmark 1900 address to the Second International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris, in which he set out twenty-three open problems intended to shape the course of twentieth-century mathematics. This edition, prepared under the general editorship of Pavel Sergeevich Alexandrov, pairs the full text of Hilbert's address with a set of commentaries by leading Soviet mathematicians, each surveying the progress made toward resolving an individual problem as of the late 1960s, from the continuum hypothesis and the consistency of arithmetic through to the tenth problem on Diophantine equations, whose full resolution by Yuri Matiyasevich followed only a year later, in 1970. Few documents in the history of mathematics have proved as consequential in directing the discipline's development as Hilbert's list, and this collection remains a primary reference for historians of mathematics tracing both the original problems and their reception within the Soviet mathematical community.
