A scarce first Georgian edition of selected short stories by Orhan Hançerlioğlu (1916-1991), a prominent twentieth-century Turkish novelist, philosopher, and researcher. Hançerlioğlu was a central figure in modern Turkish literature, known for his psychologically acute and socially conscious prose that frequently explored the struggles of the Anatolian peasantry and the urban working class. This volume, centered around his acclaimed titular story "Ali," was translated directly from Turkish into Georgian by N. Janashia and published by the "Nakaduli" press in Tbilisi during a period of expanding cultural exchange between the Soviet Union and the Middle East. The edition is particularly notable for its striking cover design and interior illustrations, executed in a bold, expressionistic woodcut style that visually bridges Soviet graphic sensibilities with traditional Middle Eastern motifs. While printed in a nominally standard run of 10,000 copies, provincial Soviet-era translations of regional literature issued in fragile paperback bindings suffer from extremely low survival rates. As such, this volume represents a highly uncommon and desirable artifact for collectors of modern Turkish literature in translation, Soviet Caucasian publishing history, and mid-century graphic design.
