Tadevos Khachaturi Hakobyan (1917-1989), Doctor of Historical Sciences and long-time head of a department at Yerevan State University, devoted his principal scholarly work to the city's past, published between 1959 and 1971 as the multi-volume History of Yerevan. This book is, in the author's own words, its third and final part, covering the thirty-eight years from 1879 to 1917, from the late imperial period of the Erivan Governorate to the eve of the October Revolution. It is divided into the years 1879-1914 and 1914-1917 and treats the economic and cultural life of the city, its communal conditions, administrative and political life, the state of the population, and the liberation and social movements, relying largely on archival material. According to the foreword, the volume publishes for the first time numerous illustrations and a large-format plan of the city with a scheme based on it; the folding plan of Erivan of 1906-1911 is bound in. It closes with reference appendices, a name index and a bibliography of the literature used for this and the preceding volumes. Printed by the university press and approved by its editorial board, it remains a basic reference for the urban, social and political history of Yerevan and is sought by collectors of Armenian history, the history of the Caucasus under the Russian Empire, and Soviet Armenian scholarship.
