Meri Ilyinichna Gugushvili's scholarly monograph examines the poetic legacy of Teimuraz I (1589-1663), King of Kakheti and one of the central figures of seventeenth-century Georgian literature. Dethroned and driven into Persian exile after decades of resistance to Safavid encroachment, Teimuraz turned his political tragedy into some of the most personally charged verse in the Georgian classical canon, most famously the martyrological poem "Ketevaniani," commemorating his mother Queen Ketevan's execution by Shah Abbas I, alongside romances such as "Vardbulbuliani" (The Rose and the Nightingale) and reworkings of Persian narrative poems into Georgian verse. Gugushvili traces the historical and biographical context behind Teimuraz's work, situates his poetry within the broader currents of the sixteenth-to-eighteenth-century "silver age" of Georgian letters, and analyzes his engagement with themes of martyrdom, homeland, and personal loss. Issued by the Rustaveli Institute of the History of Georgian Literature under the Georgian Academy of Sciences, the volume represents standard scholarly apparatus of the period: a literary-historical study intended for specialists in Georgian classical poetry and Caucasian literary history rather than a general readership.
