A handsome 1930s Soviet edition of Alexander Griboyedov's immortal verse comedy "Woe from Wit" (Gore ot uma). Originally written in the 1820s, the play is a masterful satire of post-Napoleonic Russian aristocratic society in Moscow, blending elements of classicism with emerging realism and romanticism. Its aphoristic brilliance permanently enriched the Russian language, supplying it with countless enduring idioms. This 1938 Leningrad edition was issued by Goslitizdat under the textual editorship of the prominent literary scholar N. K. Piksanov. Of particular collector interest is the volume's elegant graphic design executed by Valerian Dvorakovsky (1904-1979), a Vkhutemas graduate who studied under the legendary masters Dmitry Mitrokhin and Vladimir Konashevich. Dvorakovsky's refined typographic treatment, understated binding design, and delicate headpieces exemplify the high standards of 1930s Soviet book artistry, distinguishing this edition from standard mass-market printings of the era.
