This 1936 volume is the second, revised Russian edition of Richard Goldschmidt's seminal work "The Doctrine of Heredity," translated from the third German edition. Goldschmidt (1878–1958), a prominent German-American geneticist and evolutionary biologist, was known for his integrative approach combining genetics, embryology, and evolution, and for his controversial "hopeful monster" hypothesis. Published by the specialized state publisher "Biomedgiz" during a period of vibrant development in Soviet genetics (before the rise of Lysenkoism), this translation made contemporary Western genetic theories accessible to the Russian-speaking scientific community. The publication, with a substantial print run of 10,200 copies, served as an important textbook and reference for biologists, physicians, and students. As a document from the pre-war scientific era, it represents the international exchange of ideas in genetics and is a collectible item for historians of science.
