This popular anthology of Georgian folk poetry, compiled and edited by Al. Gomiashvili, gathers ballads, lyric songs, and narrative verse drawn from the oral tradition, printed alongside a scholarly foreword situating Georgian folk poetry in relation to the courtly verse of Rustaveli's "The Knight in the Panther's Skin." Its principal distinction lies in the design and illustration by Gulda Kaladze, a sculptor and graphic artist who later chaired the art council responsible for founding Tbilisi's David Kakabadze Gallery of Fine Arts. Kaladze conceived the entire volume, jacket and interior plates alike, in a deliberately archaizing visual idiom evoking medieval Georgian manuscript illumination and fresco painting: gold grounds, geometric cross-patterned borders, and stylized, large-eyed figures rendered in the flattened, iconic manner of Georgian church art, applied here to secular subjects such as a mother and child drawn directly from the folk verses on the facing page. The result is a deliberately unified object in which binding, jacket, and illustration reinforce the anthology's claim that Georgian folk poetry shares deep roots with the country's high medieval visual and literary culture.
