Issue No. 1 of the twelfth year of "Ganatleba" ("Education"), a monthly scientific, pedagogical, and literary journal founded in Tbilisi in 1908 by the Georgian educator and public figure Luarsab Botsvadze (1866-1919), who edited and published it continuously from its founding. The journal served as the official organ of the teachers' unions of Georgia and was among the principal platforms through which Georgian-language pedagogy, school curricula, and educational reform were debated in the final years of the Russian Empire and, from May 1918, the newly declared Democratic Republic of Georgia. This issue, dated 1919, appeared in the same year as Botsvadze's death on 24 June 1919, making it one of the last numbers of the journal to be issued under its founding editor, at the height of the brief and historically pivotal period of Georgian independence that ended with the Soviet invasion of February 1921. Its contents, per the table of contents, address the pressing educational questions of the moment: engineering and public schooling, an institute for continuing and adult education, school library organization, national curricula for public schools, model rural schools, and a circular from the Ministry of Education, alongside subject bibliographies compiled for teachers. As an ephemeral serial publication from the brief independence period, survival of complete, legible issues is limited, and this copy's partially unopened leaves suggest it was seldom read after acquisition. It is of interest to historians of Georgian education, the Democratic Republic of Georgia (1918-1921), and Caucasian periodical print culture.
