Besarion Gabashvili, known by his pen name Besiki (1750-1791), is generally regarded as the last major figure of Old Georgian literature and the outstanding poet of the Rococo current at the royal court of Kartli-Kakheti. Son of Zakaria Gabashvili, tutor to King Teimuraz II, Besiki was raised and educated within the royal court and became a favorite of King Erekle II's circle, celebrated for his refined, sensuous love lyrics — most famously those addressed to Queen Anna, consort of the Imeretian throne, portrayed here in an inserted illustrated plate — as well as panegyric odes and virtuosic experiments in verse form (acrostics, alphabetic poems). He later pursued a diplomatic career on behalf of the Georgian crown and died in Iași, in the Principality of Moldavia, while on a mission connected with the Russo-Turkish war. This edition represents the standard twentieth-century critical text of Besiki's poetry, established by the literary historian Alexander Baramidze together with the linguist Varlam Topuria.
