Boris Pasternak submitted Doctor Zhivago to Novy Mir and Znamya in January 1956 and was turned down. The novel first appeared in Giangiacomo Feltrinelli's Italian edition of November 1957. After the Nobel Prize of October 1958 Pasternak was expelled from the Writers' Union on 28 October and pressed into refusing the award. Thirty years later, in the first years of glasnost, the novel at last reached Soviet readers: Novy Mir serialized it in its issues for January to April 1988, each printed in 1,150,000 copies. The first instalment opens with a foreword by Dmitry Likhachev. The text was prepared and annotated by Pasternak's son Evgeny and the scholar Vladimir Borisov, and it carries a printed note describing it as the final authorial text. Issue no. 6 added a substantial documentary study of the novel's creative history by the same two editors. The present volume gathers the sheets of these five issues in an owner's plain purple binding, with a hand-lettered half-title standing in for a title page. The owner struck through unrelated texts printed on the same leaves, so that the volume reads as a continuous novel with its editorial apparatus. A reader's compilation of this kind preserves the form in which many copies of the novel were actually kept and read in 1988. The text block shows period newsprint paper that has toned, with a few brown stains and pencil underlining.
