Lev Vasilyevich Firsov (1926-1981) was a geologist and Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences who from 1968 until his death headed the absolute-age laboratory at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk, where radiocarbon dating developed intensively under his direction. This volume grew out of his long collaboration with archaeologists and, by his own account, two decades of work on the history and archaeology of the Crimea. It presents 90 radiocarbon dates for archaeological sites in the Crimea, 57 of them for Tauric Chersonesos, spanning the seventh to sixth centuries BC to the fourteenth century AD. The first part is a practical introduction to the method, with chapters on sample treatment, sources of error, the interpretation of dates and the dating of mollusc shells. The second part is a series of essays on individual excavated structures at Chersonesos, among them the theatre and Hellenistic necropolis, the section beneath the basilica excavated in 1958, the gate area, the baths, the church with arcosolia and the priest's house, between which stands an unexpected verse narrative, "Chersonesos - Kherson - Korsun". The appendices include a chronology of events in the Crimea, a list of the laboratory's dates, and a survey of reported earthquakes that gave rise to Firsov's hypothesis of destructive Crimean earthquakes every 100 to 150 years, later challenged by seismologists. Printed in 1,500 copies, the book is of interest to archaeologists of the Black Sea region, historians of radiocarbon dating and collectors of Soviet scientific publishing.
