This rare 1934 jubilee volume celebrates the 1000th anniversary of the birth of the great Persian poet Abū l-Qāsim Ferdowsī (c. 934–1020/1025), author of the epic Shāhnāmeh (“Book of Kings”). It contains key papers presented at a special session in Leningrad organized by the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the State Hermitage Museum. Leading Soviet Iranists contributed: Orbeli on Shāhnāmeh, Romaskevich on the history of its study, Yakubovsky on the Ghaznavid state, Bertels on Ferdowsi’s creativity, Chaikin on the Asadi poets, Samoylovich on the Iranian epic’s influence in Turkic literatures of Central Asia, Trever on Sasanian Iran in the poem, and Lozinsky’s translations from Shāhnāmeh. The book features elegant 1930s academic design by artist E.H. Westphalen (cover, endpapers, title page, decorative headpieces). With a modest print run of 5,175 copies, well-preserved examples are highly desirable for collectors of Persian literature, classical Oriental studies, Soviet academic history, and rare jubilee publications of the Academy of Sciences.
