Ketterer Eugène
Défilé-marche (de Kaschte): Military Transcription for Piano.
Op. 220. Key: D-flat major.
Moscow: P. Jurgenson, [1900s].
7 pp.; softcover.
This is an original early 20th-century (likely 1900–1910) edition of Eugène Ketterer’s (1831–1870) popular salon march “Défilé-marche (de Kaschte)”, Op. 220, arranged as a brilliant military-style transcription for solo piano. Ketterer, a French composer and pianist of the Second Empire era, was renowned for his light, virtuosic piano pieces in the style of military parades, galops, and marches that evoked grandeur and elegance — perfect for drawing-room performances and amateur pianists. The piece, originally inspired by a theatrical or exotic “Kaschte” motif (possibly a misspelling or variant of “Cachet” or a fictional military reference), features a lively D-flat major theme with dotted rhythms, fanfare-like figures, dramatic dynamic contrasts, and sparkling runs — typical of mid-19th-century French bravura piano music.
