Ernest Thompson Seton (1860–1946), the renowned Canadian-American naturalist, wildlife artist, author, and founder of the Woodcraft Indians (precursor to the Boy Scouts), was one of the pioneers of modern animal stories written from the perspective of the animals themselves. His works, blending scientific accuracy with anthropomorphic storytelling and dramatic illustrations, profoundly influenced nature writing, children’s literature, and the conservation movement in the early 20th century.
“Bingo und andere Tiergeschichten” is the 1908 ninth German edition of Seton’s classic collection, originally published in English as part of his “Animal Lives” series. The book includes the famous story of Bingo (the loyal but tragic dog), along with other vivid tales of wild animals such as wolves, foxes, bears, deer, and birds, each narrated with Seton’s signature empathy, detailed observation of animal behavior, and moral undertones. All line drawings in the text and most full-page plates are Seton’s own masterful work — he was a professionally trained artist who spent years studying and sketching wildlife in the American and Canadian wilderness.
