This is the first exhibition catalog devoted to the graphic work of Aleksei Ilyich Kravchenko (1889-1940), one of the outstanding masters of Russian printmaking in the first half of the twentieth century. Born in Pokrovsk, Samara governorate, Kravchenko showed exceptional talent from childhood, entering the Moscow School of Painting at sixteen. He became a central figure of Russian graphic art, working across etching, drypoint, aquatint, and woodcut, and achieving particular mastery in xylography. His prints — dramatic, expressionistic compositions of extraordinary tonal range — brought him international recognition during his lifetime; his works entered the collections of the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the Rumyantsev Museum, and major European institutions. He is especially celebrated for his book illustrations and for his representations of revolutionary-era Russia, Italy, and the Orient following his travels in the 1920s.
The catalog covers the period 1916–1924, encompassing Kravchenko's formative and early mature work. It was compiled by Pavel Mikhailovich Dulsky (1879-1956), art historian, director of the Kazan Central Museum, and the most prolific author of monographic publications on Russian and Tatar art in the region. Dulsky's essay on Kravchenko's art (pp. 3–16) is followed by a bibliography (p. 17), a list of the works shown at the exhibition (pp. 18–21), and a glossary of engraving techniques for non-specialist readers (pp. 22–23). Exceptionally, the woodcut decorations throughout the catalog — headpieces and tailpieces on eleven pages — are original designs engraved on wood by Kravchenko himself, making each copy a minor specimen of the artist's direct printmaking work.
