A restricted-issue commemorative album on the Olympic record of Dynamo, the oldest and most powerful of the Soviet sports societies, founded in 1923 under the auspices of the state security apparatus and drawing its membership from the internal affairs and security services throughout the Soviet period. Compiled by Georgy Chernevich, later co-author of the standard Dynamo encyclopaedia, the volume assembles illustrated portrait-biographies of every Dynamo athlete decorated at the Olympic Games from Helsinki in 1952 through Moscow in 1980, arranged by discipline: basketball, boxing, all three wrestling codes, cycling, water polo, volleyball, gymnastics, rowing, athletics, modern pentathlon, shooting, weightlifting, fencing, football, biathlon, speed skating, cross-country skiing, figure skating and ice hockey. Among the subjects are the goalkeeper Lev Yashin, the gymnast Alexander Dityatin, the sprinter Valery Borzov, the decathlete Nikolai Avilov, and a substantial Georgian contingent from the Tbilisi Dynamo organisation including the discus thrower Nina Dumbadze, the judoka Anzor Kiknadze, the water polo player Nodar Gvakharia and the track cyclist Omari Pkhakadze. A statistical appendix tabulates Dynamo's participation and medal yield at each summer and winter Games. The design is by Georgy Terzibashyants, who gives the book a strong late-Soviet graphic identity: gilt slab lettering on white cloth, and striped blue endpapers built from the society's cursive monogram. Printed in only 3,500 copies and marked as a non-trade issue, it was distributed institutionally rather than sold. The present copy was given to a delegate of the society's VI All-Union Conference in July 1982 and survives with both the presentation leaf and the silk conference pennant, an unusually complete survival of a Soviet institutional presentation set.
