This is a Russian translation of the seminal work Semiconductor Counters for Nuclear Radiations by the English experimental physicists Geoffrey Dearnaley (1929–1994) and Douglas C. Northrop. The original English edition was published in 1963, and the present translation was released in 1966 by the Soviet publishing house "Mir" ("World"), which specialized in translating foreign scientific and technical literature. This book was a key text at the time, detailing the principles, technology, and applications of semiconductor detectors—a revolutionary advancement for the detection and spectroscopy of nuclear radiation. The Russian edition was prepared under the scholarly supervision of the renowned Soviet physicist Vasily Sergeevich Vavilov (1926–1995), an expert in semiconductor physics and photoconductivity, who also contributed a preface. The translation made this cutting-edge Western technology, crucial for nuclear physics, radiation measurement, and later for medical diagnostics and space research, accessible to Soviet scientists and engineers during the Cold War period. As a first Russian edition with a substantial print run, this volume is an important historical document of scientific and technological exchange.
