James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851), the first American novelist of international reach, published The Pilot in 1823, and it is often called the first sea novel in world literature. Cooper is said to have written it to show that a story of the sea could be told with a seaman's accuracy, and its mysterious Pilot, who steers an American vessel along the dangerous English coast during the War of Independence, is generally taken to be the Scottish-born naval commander John Paul Jones. In the Soviet Union Cooper was read as a humane adventure writer, and the novel was a staple of juvenile publishing. This copy is the Moscow printing of Detgiz of 1959, signed to press on 17 September in a run of 150,000 copies, and it is number 50 of the Library of Adventure and Science Fiction (BPiNF), the Detgiz series that collectors know as the frame series for the ornamental border of its covers. The translation is by Nina Emelyannikova, and the verse epigraphs were rendered and edited by D. Gorfinkel; Litres dates this Russian text to 1959. The volume closes with an afterword by A. Narkevich and a short glossary of nautical terms by Yu. Medvedev. The drawings and the cover are by I. Kuskov, and the pictorial endpapers show two sailing warships exchanging fire among rocks. It suits collectors of Soviet adventure literature, frame series completists, and readers of naval fiction and of early American literature in Russian.
