James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851), the first major American novelist of international reach, published The Last of the Mohicans in 1826 as the second of the five Leatherstocking Tales. Set in 1757, during the French and Indian War, it follows the scout Natty Bumppo (Hawkeye), the Mohican Chingachgook and his son Uncas as they escort two sisters across the wilderness around Lake George and Fort William Henry. In the Soviet Union Cooper was read as a humane adventure writer who sympathised with the Native peoples and exposed the violence of colonial conquest, and his novels were staples of juvenile publishing. This copy belongs to the Library of Adventure and Science Fiction (BPiNF), the long-running Detgiz series launched in the early 1950s and known to collectors as the frame series for the ornamental border of its covers; the standard series bibliography records this title as number 6. The text is the Russian translation by E. M. Chistyakova-Ver and A. P. Repina, which bibliographies date to 1936. The illustrations are credited on the title page to Andriolli, that is Michał Elwiro Andriolli (1836-1893), the Vilnius-born Polish illustrator of Italian descent best known for his work on Mickiewicz, whose Cooper drawings were reused in many Russian editions. A pictorial endpaper by D. Khaikin and a cover drawing by A. Golyakhovskaya complete the design. The Detgiz print run of 75,000 copies means the book is not scarce, and it is not a first edition of the novel in Russian; its appeal lies in the early date within a collectable series, the Andriolli plates and the period binding. It suits collectors of Soviet adventure literature, frame series completists, and readers interested in how American classics were presented to Soviet young readers.
