This is a rare surviving example of internal technical documentation from Georgia's Soviet-era wine industry: a working compilation, bound to order in Tbilisi in 1981, gathering fifty-seven official Soviet State Standards (GOST) governing nearly every stage of wine, cognac, and spirits production - from grape wine and Soviet champagne through liqueurs, vodka, cognac spirits, laboratory reagents, glass bottles, wooden barrels, filter cardboard, and packing crates. The volume was assembled by SPKTB POVP "Samtrest," the Special Design and Technological Bureau of the winemaking production association "Samtrest" - the state trust that had controlled Georgia's major wineries, distilleries, and wine-fruit state farms since its founding in 1929, and whose name appeared on the label of virtually every bottle of Georgian wine and cognac exported from the Georgian SSR. Each of the fifty-seven constituent standards is itself an официальное издание, individually typeset and printed by the USSR State Committee for Standards (Gosstandart) in Moscow between 1950 and 1981, and numbered sequentially in manuscript to mark its place in this particular working set, with a typewritten index added at the front for ready reference. Compilations of this kind were assembled in very small numbers - sometimes as unique items - for the technical and quality-control libraries of individual enterprises and design bureaus, and were never intended for public sale; this is a category of Soviet industrial ephemera that rarely survives intact outside factory archives, since such working references were typically cannibalized for individual standards or discarded once superseded. As a physical assemblage, the volume documents, standard by standard, the technical infrastructure - viticultural, chemical, and logistical - underpinning the Georgian SSR's wine and cognac export economy at the close of the Brezhnev era, and should interest historians of Soviet standardization and industrial design, students of the Georgian wine trade, and collectors of Samtrest-related material.
