A scholarly festschrift issued by the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR and the Georgian Historical-Ethnographic Society to mark the centenary in 1976-77 of Ivane Javakhishvili (1876-1940), the founding figure of modern Georgian historical scholarship and source studies. Javakhishvili's own foundational four-part study of the methods and sources of history, together with his pioneering work on the medieval Georgian chronicle compilation Kartlis Tskhovreba, established the discipline of Georgian historiography as an independent scholarly field, and he served as founding rector of Tbilisi State University before being forced from that post by the Soviet authorities in 1926. The present volume gathers contributions by Georgian historians and philologists assessing Javakhishvili's legacy across several fields: his work on the Georgian Historical-Ethnographic Society and its role in preserving and cataloguing the national historical record, his contributions to the study of Georgian ethnogenesis and ethnography, his research on the origins of Georgian writing, and his engagement with the historiography of Georgian law and numismatics, among other subjects; a separate contribution engages with the eighteenth-century Georgian royal genealogical and heraldic tradition, including the disputed "alilo" designations discussed with reference to Volney's 1787 Voyage en Égypte et en Syrie.
