This documentary monograph, issued by the State Museum of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, is devoted to Irodion Evdoshvili (1873-1916), the peasant-born poet whose real surname was Khositashvili. Expelled from the Tbilisi Theological Seminary in 1893, he became one of the voices of the 1905 revolution in Georgia, and Soviet criticism credits him with introducing the worker and the revolutionary fighter into Georgian verse. After the defeat of the uprising he was arrested and tried, held in the Metekhi prison, and in 1910 exiled to Solvychegodsk in northern Russia. He died in 1916. The book is organised in three parts. An introductory study of ten sections opens with an assessment of his place in Georgian literature and a survey of the sources, then follows his career through 1905 and 1906-1907, his arrest and preliminary investigation, the trial and the Metekhi prison, the exile and the return. The second part prints documents, preceded by a note on the principles of publication, and includes his petition to the Literacy Society, official papers and the telegrams sent after his death. Indices of names and places close the volume. A frontispiece portrait and a 1906 portrait of the poet with his wife Mariam illustrate the text. The title page and the colophon (signed for printing in December 1939) give 1939, while the cover is dated 1940, a common pattern for books completed at the end of the year. The edition was limited to 1,050 copies. It is a useful source for students of Georgian literary history and of the revolutionary movement in the Caucasus.
