A fascinating theatrical memoir by Nino Chkheidze (1881-1963), a foundational figure of modern Georgian theater and a People's Artist of the Georgian SSR. In this deeply personal account, dedicated to her husband and fellow theater worker Mikheil Koreli, Chkheidze reflects on the arduous path of the Georgian stage during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She provides vivid recollections of her theatrical debut, the struggles of provincial touring companies, and the eventual triumph of the Georgian national theater, alongside portraits of her legendary contemporaries such as Lado Meskhishvili, Valerian Gunia, and Kote Marjanishvili. The volume's collector appeal is substantially elevated by its striking cover design, executed by Lado Gudiashvili (1896-1980), the most internationally celebrated Georgian modernist painter of the twentieth century. Gudiashvili's characteristic ornamental style, utilizing a harmonious green and yellow color scheme with elegant, flowing typography, makes this otherwise modest paperback a beautiful example of mid-century Soviet Georgian book design. Issued in a print run of 4,000 copies, memoirs of this era in their original, fragile wrappers are increasingly uncommon, particularly those bearing the artistic hallmark of Gudiashvili.
