Arnold Chikobava (1898–1985) was an outstanding Georgian linguist, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR and corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He was a leading figure in Ibero-Caucasian (Kartvelian and North Caucasian) linguistics, a critic of N.Ya. Marr's "Japhetic theory," and the founder of the Department of Ibero-Caucasian Languages at Tbilisi State University. He authored fundamental works on the grammar, history, and comparative study of Georgian and related Caucasian languages.
This is a foundational 1965 textbook by Academician Arnold Chikobava, providing a comprehensive history of the scholarly study of the Ibero-Caucasian language family (a term encompassing Kartvelian and North Caucasian languages). Designed for university philology students, it systematically reviews the development of research, key figures, and major theoretical contributions from the early 19th to the mid-20th century, reflecting the state of the field in Soviet Georgia.
