A 1937 centenary school edition of the selected poetry of Ilia Chavchavadze (1837-1907), who alongside Akaki Tsereteli stands as a co-founder of the modern Georgian literary and national revival movement, and whose 1907 assassination made him a martyr-figure of Georgian national consciousness. The frontispiece portrait is explicitly captioned with three dates, "1837-1907-1937," marking birth, death, and the centenary being observed by this very publication — 1937 having been designated a major state commemorative year for Chavchavadze in Soviet Georgia, a somewhat paradoxical rehabilitation of a politically conservative nineteenth-century nationalist figure within the Stalinist cultural apparatus. The selection gathers Chavchavadze's best-known shorter lyrics — including "Guთnis-deda" (The Ploughman's Wife), "Kartvelis Deda" (A Georgian Mother's Lament), and his elegies to Alexandre Chavchavadze and Nikoloz Baratashvili — together with his major narrative poems, among them "Achrdili" (The Vision/The Ghost), "Mepe Dimitri Tavdadebuli" (King Dimitri the Self-Sacrificing), and "Gandegili" (The Hermit), one of the most celebrated long poems in the Georgian language. The scholarly annotations were prepared by Korneli Kekelidze (1879-1962), the foremost Georgian philologist and historian of medieval and modern Georgian literature of his generation and later founding figure of the Institute of Manuscripts, lending the school edition unusual academic weight for its format.
