A comprehensive mid-century catalog of the State Tretyakov Gallery, issued in 1947 as the twenty-eighth updated edition. Following the end of the Second World War and the return of the gallery's evacuated masterpieces from the deep rear, this edition documents the re-established permanent exhibition of the Soviet Union's premier museum of national art. The catalog provides an extensive inventory of the collection, spanning from early medieval Kievan Rus and Novgorod icons to classical nineteenth-century Russian painting and contemporary Socialist Realist sculpture. The volume is heavily illustrated with 198 pages of plates, capturing key works by masters such as Repin, Surikov, and Rublev, alongside monumental Soviet works like Mukhina's Worker and Kolkhoz Woman. While not a first edition, this 1947 publication serves as an important primary document of post-war Soviet museology and art historiography. The copy retains a charming provenance note indicating it was purchased directly at the gallery in Moscow in 1950 by a visiting Georgian art enthusiast.
