The first Russian edition of a lecture course by one of twentieth-century France's most influential mathematicians. Henri Cartan (1904-2008) was the son of Élie Cartan, the geometer who originated the theory of differential forms, and one of the founding members of the Bourbaki collective in 1934; his postwar seminar at the École Normale Supérieure trained a generation of leading mathematicians, including Jean-Pierre Serre and Alexander Grothendieck, both future Fields Medalists. His own principal contributions lay in sheaf theory, homological algebra (developed jointly with Samuel Eilenberg in their celebrated 1956 book), and the theory of several complex variables. The present volume reproduces his lectures for the "Mathématique II" course at the University of Paris, covering differential calculus and differential equations in Banach spaces, the theory of differential forms and the multivariable integration built upon it, and an introduction to the calculus of variations and to the moving-frame method in the differential geometry of curves and surfaces, a technique his father had likewise pioneered; one commentator has described the book as a kind of monument to the elder Cartan's creation of exterior form theory. Beyond mathematics, Cartan was a prominent human-rights campaigner from the 1970s onward, leading the international mathematicians' committee that secured the 1976 release of the Soviet dissident mathematician Leonid Plyushch from psychiatric confinement and advocating for persecuted mathematicians worldide, work that stood in pointed contrast to the political climate in which this very book found Soviet readers through Mir's translation program.
