The first and only Russian edition of a foundational work by one of the greatest differential geometers of the twentieth century. Élie Cartan was born in 1869 in Dolomieu, in the French Alps, the son of a village blacksmith; his exceptional early promise earned him a scholarship path that led to the École Normale Supérieure and, eventually, to a professorship at the University of Paris. His 1894 doctoral dissertation laid the algebraic foundations for the structure theory of Lie groups, and he went on to develop the theory of exterior differential forms and differential systems, the moving-frame method presented in this volume, and, in 1913, the mathematical theory of spinors, discovered years before physicists found them indispensable to quantum mechanics. The moving-frame method collected here, attaching a frame of reference to each point of a curve or surface and tracking its motion through the structure equations he formulated with Darboux and Maurer, remains a standard technique in differential geometry and underlies the tetrad formalism used in general relativity. He was the father of Henri Cartan, the equally distinguished twentieth-century mathematician and founding Bourbaki member. The translator, Sergei Pavlovich Finikov, was himself a leading figure in Soviet differential geometry and one of the principal conduits through which Cartan's exterior-forms methods entered Russian mathematics, having earlier written his own monograph on Cartan's method of exterior forms.
