A major Soviet scholarly monograph on the mathematics and theory of medieval Central Asian architecture, by Mitkhat Sagadatdinovich Bulatov, Doctor of Architecture and a leading specialist in the architectural heritage of Uzbekistan and the wider Timurid and pre-Timurid world. Sponsored jointly by the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the Hamza Hakim-zade Niyazi Institute of Art History of the Uzbek SSR, and introduced by the eminent Central Asian art historian Lazar Rempel, the study addresses a genuinely original question within Soviet architectural scholarship: whether medieval builders of Central Asia worked according to a systematic theory of geometric proportion, comparable to the harmonic systems long recognized in European architectural history. Bulatov argues, and substantiates through an extensive corpus of measured monuments, that such a science of proportion did indeed exist, tracing its theoretical foundations to the geometric methods described by the tenth-century philosopher al-Farabi and to medieval treatises for practicing architects, before demonstrating, chapter by chapter, how these principles were applied in building construction across the ninth through fifteenth centuries - encompassing structural statics, arch and vault curve geometry, and the mathematical basis of architectural ornament. Two substantial appendices address the social position and education of medieval Central Asian architects and present, in Russian translation, a treatise on similar and corresponding figures relevant to proportion theory. Issued by Nauka's Main Editorial Office of Oriental Literature in a run of 3,500 copies, the book remains a standard reference for historians of Islamic and Central Asian architecture, offering one of the most rigorous Soviet-era analyses of the geometric culture underlying the mosques, madrasas, and mausolea of medieval Bukhara, Samarkand, and the wider Timurid architectural sphere.
