This posthumous collection presents previously unpublished historical prose by Valery Yakovlevich Bryusov (1873–1924), a towering figure of Russian Symbolism who later engaged with the Soviet literary establishment. The volume, centered on the story Jupiter Defeated, was meticulously prepared by his widow, I. M. Bryusova, who also contributed a scholarly article; an additional article was provided by the literary critic Igor Postupalsky. The cover was designed by artist A. P. Radishchev. Published in 1934 by the state literary publisher GIHL, this edition represents a significant effort to integrate Bryusov's legacy—particularly his lesser-known experiments in historical fiction—into the Soviet literary canon during the period of evolving cultural policy.
