The sole Russian translation of the final book by Léon Brillouin (1889-1969), the distinguished French physicist celebrated for his foundational contributions to solid-state physics and information theory, published in English only after his death. Using the methods of operational analysis he had developed across his career, Brillouin here undertakes a critical re-examination of the foundational postulates of Einstein's special and general relativity, arguing that general relativity should be regarded only as an approximation to reality requiring serious refinement, and examining theoretical and experimental questions surrounding the detection of gravitational waves, including the measurement of their frequency and velocity and the potential use of a gravitational analogue of the laser (the "graser") to test whether gravitational waves propagate at the speed of light. The Russian edition was placed under the editorship of Alexei Zinovievich Petrov, the Soviet relativist renowned internationally for the Petrov classification of gravitational fields, whose preface situates Brillouin's critique within contemporary Soviet discussions of the epistemological status of physical theory. The book remains of interest to historians of twentieth-century physics as a provocative late intervention by a major figure in an unrelated field into the foundations of relativity, and to collectors of Soviet popular-scientific and critical physics publishing of the early 1970s.
