Georgia as I Saw It is the principal published record of the ethnographic work of Nino Brailashvili, born in Baku in 1899. She studied at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts in 1924-1929 under teachers including Giorgi Chubinashvili, Yakob Nikoladze and Evgeny Lansere, and was a member of the Artists' Union of Georgia from 1932. A Georgian national doll she made in 1937, "Manana", won a prize at a toy competition in Moscow. With Tinatin Tumanishvili she founded the Tbilisi Toy Museum, where she was the principal artist for thirty years, and she is credited with founding the genre of the Georgian national doll. Her ethnographic drawings come from expeditions to Georgian villages over some three decades. The album prints them for the first time. It contains about 280 colour and black-and-white illustrations: plates of national dress, textile and embroidery from Khevsureti, Tusheti, Rachа, Imereti and other regions, printed blue tablecloths, furniture and household objects, together with the artist's field diaries, sketches, notes and part of her recollections. The introduction and notes were compiled by E. Privalova, Doctor of Art Criticism. The text is in Georgian, Russian and English, and the dust jacket carries the variant title Ethnography of Georgia. The print run of 17,700 copies was large for an art album, but the book remains a standard visual source for Georgian folk costume and folk art, and clean copies with the jacket are sought after. It will interest collectors of Caucasian ethnography, historians of costume and textiles, doll and toy collectors, and designers.
