A substantial specialized lexicographical reference produced by three researchers of the Institute of Linguistics at the Georgian SSR Academy of Sciences. The Kartlian dialect (ქართლური) occupies a uniquely central position in the history of the Georgian language: it is the dialect of the historic region of Kartli, the heartland of the unified Georgian kingdom centered on Mtskheta and Tbilisi, and it constitutes the direct historical basis of standard literary Georgian. Despite this intimate relationship with the literary norm, Kartlian preserves its own distinctive phonological, morphological, and lexical features, including archaic vocabulary, regionally borrowed terms, and forms absent from the written standard. The presentation as "masalebi" (materials) follows a recognized genre of Soviet-era Georgian dialectological publishing: not a finalized normative dictionary, but a comprehensive preliminary lexical collection gathered from systematic fieldwork expeditions and organized for specialist use and for further lexicographical treatment. The Institute of Linguistics of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, continuing the tradition established by Arnold Chikobava and other foundational Kartvelianists of the mid-twentieth century, was the principal center for Georgian dialectological research throughout the Soviet period. The volume was edited with a scholarly introduction by M. Ch'abashvili. With a print run of only 3,000 copies, this is a genuinely limited institutional reference publication, virtually absent from the international antiquarian market. Of primary interest to specialists in Kartvelian linguistics, Georgian dialectology, historical lexicography, and the study of the relationship between literary Georgian and its regional variants.
