This 1946 first edition of the "History of Georgia," authored by the preeminent Georgian historians Nikoloz Berdzenishvili, Ivane Javakhishvili, and Simon Janashia, represents the first systematic, state-sanctioned synthesis of Georgian history from antiquity to the Russian annexation in the early nineteenth century. Published in a print run of 5,000 copies, the volume is heavily illustrated and features valuable folding inserts, including detailed historical maps of the Caucasus and a comprehensive genealogical table of the Bagrationi royal dynasty. Beyond its immense academic significance, this specific copy holds exceptional collector value due to its uncensored preface. The introduction explicitly praises Lavrentiy Beria for his initiative in organizing the center for Georgian historical studies. Following Beria's arrest and execution in 1953, Soviet censorship aggressively mandated the destruction or systematic defacement of any printed materials bearing his name. Finding a surviving first edition with the original preface entirely intact, without ink blots or excised pages, is increasingly rare.
